IGNEOUS answers your most common questions about
Gemstones

How does the pricing work in the IGNEOUS gemstone shop?

As a general rule gemstones are made according to the so-called “4C” graduated :
• Color = color
• Carat = weight
• Clarity = purity
• Cut
The higher the quality of a gemstone is ranked in each C, the better the overall rating.
Other factors that can affect the value of gemstones include:

  • Location
  • Supply & demand
  • Treatment
  • Marketing & fashion trends

Monitoring evaluation

Oscar Wilde once said: “ We know the price of everything, the value of nothing “

The problem outlined by this great writer also applies to gemstones.
For me, Walter René Mayer, as the operator of this online gemstone trade, it is very important that my customers understand how I regulate the pricing in this online shop.
With stones from a price of 1000 euros in any case , and sometimes even below, I let go generally sworn and judicially certified experts the Replacement value in retail / retail determine. These experts are independent persons or institutes . This is very important. These appraisers are not gem dealers themselves, because that would be a conflict and they have many years of experience in valuing gemstones and appraising them. You have, so to speak, your finger on the pulse of the gem market .
As a customer, you receive reassurance that the stones offered here at prices are sold that their current Correspond to market value .

Since there are usually lower fixed costs with online trading than with a jeweler with sales outlets, I am able to buy my gemstones cheaper to offer.

Are gemstones suitable as an investment?

What makes the gemstone interesting as an investment is its compactness and mobility. This is why gemstones are also referred to as “mobile investment” or even “safe haven”. That means: you can easily take it with you and benefit from its value. In fact, there are many stories of human fates in which gemstones served as anchors of value. Even if you never get into an emergency, it is definitely comforting to know that you have taken precautions.

How is the weight of gemstones represented?

One carat (short: ct.) Weighs the equivalent of 0.2 grams, so five carats result in exactly one gram. The unit of measurement comes from ancient times, when precious stones were still weighed against the kernels of the carob tree. A dried core of the carob tree weighs an astonishingly precise 0.2 grams.
Today, gemstone dealers use calibrated carat scales that have to be readjusted and certified annually.

Why are there so many different types of cuts?

The art of stone grinding lies in emphasizing the individual (optical) properties of each gemstone through the cut. The choice of cut depends primarily on the following factors:

  • Quality of the raw material
  • Color and inclusions
  • Refraction
  • Price of the raw material
  • Fashion currents
  • Internal structure of the raw material (crystal form)
What does the location say about the gemstone?

The different locations of gemstones are determined by the history of the earth. Why a mineral originated in a particular location depends on various geological influencing factors:

  • print
  • temperature
  • elements
  • Chemical influences

There are typical places of origin for most gemstones. Some special specimens can even be narrowed down to very precise places of origin. Therefore, the place of origin can also be used for orientation when assessing the quality of gemstones.

What do inclusions say about the quality of gemstones?

Inclusions (= foreign bodies inside the gemstone) come in many forms, eg negative crystals, needles, foreign crystals, healing cracks, etc. In general, inclusions reduce the value of a gemstone. In rare cases, however, inclusions are desirable and only make up the true value of a gemstone, e.g. inclusions called “horse-tail” in demantoid.

What treatment methods are there for gemstones?

Gemstones are mostly treated to improve quality. There are different approaches depending on the stone:

  • Steaming, for color effects: With the help of evaporation, various chemical substances are applied to the surface of gemstones. This creates color effects that do not occur naturally and thus make the stone appear special.
  • Irradiate, for coloring: This form of treatment requires a label, but is often used to improve the color of gemstones. Such stones have to sit a certain time before they can be put into circulation.
  • Heating to remove inclusions: At high temperatures of up to 1600 ° C, the inclusions dissolve and bond with the gemstone material. Rutile needles (= rod-shaped mineral deposits) are less visible in sapphire and ruby, for example.
  • Heating, to improve the color: Depending on the gemstone, specific heating of certain stones can improve or even change the color. Dyes can also be infiltrated (= diffuse) into the surface of precious stones from the outside when they are heated. This can bring about a color improvement or change.
  • Heating to improve clarity: Again, it depends on the type of gemstone. Targeted heating can also improve the clarity of gemstones to a certain extent.
  • Heating with flux: The flux penetrates cracks and, when heated, ensures that these are closed. This will improve the clarity of the stones. This treatment method is mainly used for rubies.

Such treatments are noticed at the latest when they are checked in the laboratory and shown on the laboratory certificate.
