Verdelith – the green tourmaline

Around 1500 a Spanish conqueror brought a verdelite with him from Brazil, believing he had found an emerald. Until the 19th century, this green tourmaline was believed to be one emerald act. Mineralogists eventually identified it as a distinct type of mineral.

Again Rubellite (red) and the Paraiba (bright turquoise) the verdelite also belongs to a subgroup of the tourmalines, the Elbaites.

Variation in color intensity

As with all tourmalines, its hue varies depending on the angle at which you look at it. This effect is also called pleochroism in technical terms. It gives the impression that the Verdelith is glowing from within.

The tourmaline is a biaxial stone, which means that it has three colors, depending on the direction of observation. These are usually not very pronounced and there can also be three shades of green, or two shades of green and a yellowish green. The sapphire for example, is uniaxial and shows a maximum of two colors, depending on the direction of viewing. Stones that show only one color in all viewing directions (e.g. Spinel ) is called isotropic in technical terms.

use

You can have beautiful pieces of jewelry made from a tourmaline. The different green shades, from light green to olive green to dark green, can be combined equally with gold and silver.

This green version of the tourmaline is particularly popular for earrings, necklaces and bracelets.

origin

High quality verdelites come from the Pala area in San Diego, USA. Emerald green verdelites come mainly from Brazil, Namibia and Tanzania.

Most popular cuts

Elbaites often appear in long crystals, the cross-section of which resembles a rounded triangle. This usually results in elongated cut shapes, such as the baguette, octagon, emerald or cushion cut. Round-cut verdelites are seldom found.
