The morganite – a pink beryl
With the morganite you buy a pink gemstone named after the banker and mineral collector John Perpont Morgan. This gemstone was discovered in Madagascar at the beginning of the 20th century and was found almost simultaneously on the Pala (mountain in California).
The mineral beryl is the basis of the morganite. It was therefore also called rose beryl, pink beryl or pink emerald. Other well-known beryls are for example the emerald and the Aquamarine .
Hues and shades
The colors of this gemstone range from champagne-colored and pink or pink to yellowish pink and peach-colored to lilac. Morganites with an orange tinge also occur. They are often dichroic and have different shades of color depending on the viewing angle.
The color should also vary depending on the place of origin. While the morganite from California is mainly salmon-colored, that from Madagascar is a clear pink.
Morganite can be mistaken for other pink minerals due to its color, such as the pink sapphire , the pink Spinel or the kunzite.
Large Morganite from the USA & Brazil
Very large morganites of up to 25 kg have already been found in Brazil. A well-known and also large morganite bears the name “The Rose of Maine” (The Rose of Maine). He was found in 1989 in Maine (USA), weighs 13 kg and is 30 cm by 23 cm tall.
Other important sites are in California, Mozambique, Elba and Madagascar.
Morganite – a popular stone for the engagement ring
If you get a morganite from the IGNEOUS gemstone shop you can have it processed by a goldsmith into a piece of jewelry of your choice. This pink gemstone is suitable for earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings. Thanks to its color, it is particularly popular for engagement rings.
Larger stones can be ideally combined with small diamonds. A combination of several small morganites is also possible. What the piece of jewelry looks like in the end depends entirely on your preferences and the creativity of the goldsmith.
You also have a free choice when it comes to the right metal. This pink gemstone is particularly popular in red gold, but the stone also comes into its own in yellow gold and silver.
Features: hardness, inclusions & treatment
Morganites with a yellow or orange tinge are occasionally heat treated to improve color. Since this pink gemstone is relatively common and in its pure form, other forms of treatment are rare.
Thanks to their hardness of 7.5 to 8 according to Mohs, these gemstones are very robust.
Morganite: most common cuts
The morganite is almost always faceted; it is rarely found cut into a smooth cabochon.
Among the facet cuts, the brilliant cut and the step cut are particularly popular. The shapes range from round to oval to teardrop-shaped and square.
